How to Enable Auto-Delete on a Conversation

Enabling the Auto-Delete feature on a conversation is really simple and can be done in just a few simple steps. To do this:

Open the Telegram app and make sure you’re logged in. Tap on a Conversation. Tap the Profile Pic icon of your recipient. Tap More, and then Enable Auto-Delete. Select either 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, or Other. . . to set the rule for when messages auto-delete.

By following these steps, you should now have enabled auto-delete on a message for your conversation. Keep in mind that you’ll have to do this for each individual conversation that you want Auto-Delete to apply to. To adjust it, you would follow steps 1-4 but rather than tapping Enable Auto-Delete, it would be Adjust Auto-Delete. If you’re bothered by your account’s history and there are too many messages to sift through, you may consider deleting your Telegram account.

Why Would You Want Messages to Auto-Delete?

There are, of course, many reasons why you may want messages to auto-delete. It depends on many factors. Maybe you overshared with somebody while seeking advice and want the messages gone after the fact; maybe you prefer a tidier conversation that isn’t bogged down by the entire history of you and the other person’s conversation.

Whatever the reason, it’s a good step that platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp, and Signal make it much easier to delete messages. A Pew Research Center study found that 41 % of 18-29-year-olds prefer platforms with auto-deleting messages as a feature.

If you’ve long preferred Telegram but didn’t like the inability to auto-delete messages (unless using a Secret Chat), you’ll be glad that now you can. And while now you can auto-delete messages, it may be easier to stop using Telegram if the platform still doesn’t meet your standards.

Auto-Deleting Messages on Telegram

By following the steps outlined, you can ensure that messages to and from somebody auto-delete at a set time that suits you. It’s great that Telegram continues to add useful features to set it apart from other messaging apps available to you.
