Clubhouse Launches Live Captions on iPhone
Clubhouse has finally made live captions available on its audio sessions on the iOS app, beginning with English while testing support for 12 more languages.
Live captions allow for anyone tuning in to a Room to stay in the loop on what’s being discussed by reading auto-generated captions. The company announced the new feature in a tweet, which places the audio app on par with the likes of Twitter Spaces, which already has live captions enabled, making it more accessible to a wider audience.
Considering Clubhouse is an audio-based app, this feature has been long overdue, but Clubhouse has rolled out other features instead—like Wave, Replays, Clips, and Universal Search.
Of course, live captions are expected to roll out on Android as well, but there’s no word on when just yet.
How to Enable Live Captions on Clubhouse
If you have an iPhone, follow the steps below to turn on live captions on the Clubhouse app:
Launch the Clubhouse app on your iPhone. From the Hallway, choose the Room you want to join. Now tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the Room, below your profile picture. Tap Show Captions in the pop-up menu on the screen. You will now see live captions in the Room you’re in.
Once you have enabled live captions, you will have this feature enabled in each Room you participate in going forward, unless you turn the feature off. To turn off live captions, follow the same steps above, then tap Hide Captions in the pop-up menu.
Clubhouse Is Catering to a Broader Audience
As an audio app, live captions are an essential part of Clubhouse. While the app has gained popularity to date, it has left behind an integral part of the market—those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
In addition to being inclusive of the deaf and hard of hearing, live captions are also useful for those who may want to tune in to a discussion but don’t want to play the audio or turn up the volume because they may be in a public space and may not have their earphones with them.
With the rollout of live captions, the missing link up until now, Clubhouse can reach a broader audience and go on to enjoy even more success as it continues to grow and improve.
