In case you don’t know, you can extract the color palette from an image and use the same color combination while creating a design of your own.

This article explains how to extract the color palette from an image using the Palette app on your Android device. By using the same color codes and combinations, you can improve the look and feel of your design, whether it’s for a company logo or a website interface.

Getting Started With Palette

A color palette is a collection of colors used in any image, interface, or design.

As it stands, there are several ways to extract a color palette from an image. But in this article, we’ll look at how to extract the palette of any image using the Palette app for Android. At this time of writing, the app has over 500,000 active downloads, making it one of the best color palette extractors available on the Play Store.

Palette gives you three options for importing images. With this app, you can capture an image and extract its color palette, or you can import a saved image from your gallery. Alternatively, if you found an image online, you can directly add its URL.

Let’s examine these methods one by one.

1. Extracting the Palette From an Image Using the URL

With this method, you’ll have to copy the URL of the image and paste it into the Color Palette app. Here’s how to do this.

Open your mobile browser, and go to the website where you found the image. Long-press on the image, and select Copy link address. Keep in mind that this step might differ slightly depending on what browser you’re using. 2 Images Close Now, open Palette, and choose Open image URL. Click on the Paste option.  As the URL of the image is already copied on the clipboard, pressing Paste will add the image URL automatically. 3 Images Close When finished, press OK.

Now, you will see many different color combinations along with their HEX codes. Scroll down to the bottom of the color list to see the total number of colors extracted from the image.

If you’d like to see how much each color makes up the image, click on the Settings icon, and then choose Enable Population. The app will assign a specific ratio to each color, indicating the exact percentage in which the color has been used in the image.

To extract the color palette from an image already in your gallery, follow these steps:

Open Palette. Select Choose from library. Go to the location where the image is saved on your phone, and select it. 3 Images Close After you import the image, the app will extract its color palette.

3. Extracting a Color Palette From a Captured Photo

Taking a photo in real-time is the last method of extracting a palette. You can use this method when you see a beautiful design when you’re on the go.

Here’s how to do this:

Open Palette. Select Take photo. Capture the photo you want to extract the palette from. 3 Images Close

Upon taking the photo, the app will automatically extract the color palette. Add this palette to your favorites for quick access.

Changing Settings in the Palette App

If you’d like, you can increase or decrease the number of colors that Palette extracts from an image. Here’s how to do this:

Open Palette. Click on the three dots in the top-right corner of the screen. Click on the Settings button. When the first option is enabled, Show only primary colors from an image, the palette will only extract the image’s primary six colors. The second option lets you choose exactly how many colors you want Palette to extract. 2 Images Close

In the default settings, the second option is enabled to extract any number of colors from an image. Let’s enable the first option and see how it limits the total number of colors extracted.

Once enabled, you can see that only six major colors are extracted, ranked from highest to lowest percentages.

If you decide to disable this feature, you can pick the number of colors you’d like Palette to extract. It will present the most prominent colors first, just like it does in the above screenshot.

How to Save Palettes

If you want to save a specific palette for future use, you can easily do that in Palette. Once you have your extracted palette, click on the three dots above the list of colors.

Here, you’ll be presented with three options: Add to Favorites, Save Palette, and Share Palette. While hitting Add to Favorites saves the palette within the app, Save Palette saves the image with the palette in your phone’s gallery. You can also hit Share Palette to send it via email or post it on social media.

You can access the color palettes you saved in your favorites by clicking on the heart symbol at the top of your screen.

If you chose Save Palette, Palette will save the palette and image in your phone’s gallery. This way, you can access it from your mobile device even if the app is uninstalled.
